NCL Supports “Safe OTC Hearing Aid Standards”

Mild-to-moderate hearing loss is a difficult reality that millions of Americans struggle with, which is why the availability of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids is exciting for those who are impacted by hearing loss. While making OTC hearing aids more accessible is a promising step for consumers, we at NCL would be remiss if we didn’t underscore our concerns around the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) proposed OTC hearing regulations as they currently exist.

NIOSH Study Tracks Usage of Hearing Protection

Among all workers exposed to noise in 2014, NIOSH researchers found the majority (53%) did not wear hearing protection consistently. Industries with the highest HPD non-use among noise-exposed workers included accommodation and food services (90%), health care and social assistance (83%), and education services (82%). Additionally, some of the industries where noise is a well-recognized hazard, were found to have high prevalences of HPD non-use, including agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting (74%), and construction (52%).

ASHA Notes Challenge to Hearing Impaired Wearing Masks

As government and public health officials increasingly recommend the practice of wearing two masks to help protect against new and more contagious variants of COVID-19, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) announced that it is encouraging the public to be aware of the undue challenges that this measure will pose to people who are deaf or hard of hearing—and to take some simple steps to make communication more effective for the roughly 48 million Americans with hearing loss.

Cochlear Launches ‘Hearing 20/20’ Campaign

According to Cochlear, the campaign is supported by 10 hearing health nonprofit and industry partners, and establishes a simple, common metric—defined as 20 decibels in each ear—to help simplify the ongoing conversation and actions related to monitoring hearing health and treating hearing loss, especially among adults 55 years of age and older.
