In Memoriam: Dr James Byron Snow, Jr, Past NIDCD Director

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), one of the National Institutes of Health, announced, with deep sadness, the passing of former NIDCD director Dr James Byron Snow, Jr, MD, who died on May 28, 2022. Dr Snow made significant contributions to research and clinical practice in otolaryngology (diseases of the ear, nose, throat, and related structures of the head and neck) and is considered a pioneer in the field.

Avant Institute Partners with Cognivue for Cognitive Screening

Avant Institute, in partnership with neuroscience company Cognivue, announced it has received a grant to leverage the Community Pharmacy Enhanced Services Network (CPESN) to perform cognitive screening at pharmacies in communities nationwide. The grant comes from the Davos Alzheimer’s Collaborative (DAC), the organization leading a global response to Alzheimer’s disease.

Device Allows Deaf Cyclists to “Feel” Traffic

A new device that helps deaf cyclists pinpoint the location of undetected passing traffic has been unveiled by a student from Brunel Design School. Industrial designer Divine Okoroji, who was born deaf in one ear, said he hopes the device will give the hard of hearing more confidence on their bike.

What are the major drivers of customer satisfaction with hearing aids? Almost all surveys emphasize the importance of hearing speech in noise. Recent consumer surveys also indicate that the main drivers of hearing aid satisfaction are sound quality or hearing aid performance over their satisfaction with the hearing care professional (HCP) or hearing aid physical qualities. Listening situations most important to hearing aid users for speech understanding are: 1:1 conversations and group conversations in noise, soft speech in quiet, understanding speech without visual cues, and speech at a distance.
