Etymotic Research Inc

In 2008, Etymotic Research Inc, Elk Grove Village, Ill, celebrates 25 years of research and development of products for the ear. Established in 1983 by Mead Killion, PhD, Etymotic has remained an engineering-driven company with a mission to develop products that measure, improve, and protect hearing. Scientists, engineers, and audiologists working together have generated more than 100 patents issued and pending.

Etymotic invented many of the products used and recommended daily by audiologists worldwide, such as insert earphones for audiometry and ABR, OAE test systems, custom Musicians Earplugs™, and two sizes of ready-fit high fidelity, flat-attenuation earplugs.

K-AMP® integrated circuits, the first single-channel wide-dynamic-range compression circuitry, and Class D receivers were developed by Etymotic Research. Directional microphones for in-the-ear hearing aids, array microphones, and the single-listener/multi-talker system Companion Mics™ were developed by Etymotic, as were the QuickSIN and BKB-SIN speech-in-noise tests, which are used to estimate signal-to-noise ratio loss in order to counsel patients and recommend advanced features on hearing aids.

A decade before MP3 players like the iPod® became available, Etymotic morphed its insert earphone technology to create the first noise-isolating, high-fidelity earphones for in-ear monitoring by musicians, critical listening by audiophiles, and flat frequency response earphones for the recording and acoustic research industries. Etymotic now makes earphones and wireless Bluetooth headsets for the consumer electronics and cellular industries, but remains true to its core mission. Etymotic (et-im-oh-tik) means “true to the ear.”

Frye Electronics Inc

Frye Electronics Inc, Tigard, Ore, has been designing, building, and selling hearing aid analyzers for 35 years and audiometers for 24 years. Soon the company will be manufacturing and marketing the HEARLab, designed by the National Acoustics Laboratory in Australia. This product provides cortical auditory evoked potentials to measure thresholds and fit hearing aids, using tones and speech sounds. It will be very useful for infants and noncooperative adults.

Frye’s FONIX 7000 Hearing Aid Test System, which is used by most of the world’s hearing aid manufacturers, provides the testing standards used around the world. In addition, unique tests of digital hearing aids provide information that would otherwise not be available. Digital processing delay and phase differences impact a successful fitting. Being able to demonstrate noise reduction features and directionality is also important. Frye’s FONIX FP35 Portable Hearing Aid Analyzer is popular around the world. Relatively inexpensive, it can be ordered with real ear and other features needed in different parts of the world.

As the world has become ever more computerized, Frye Electronics has created great computer programs like the FONIX NOAH Module for analyzers and one for audiometers. Its Visible Speech programs allow the user to see the response of the hearing aid on-top while the programmer is making changes. NAL and DSL-5 targets are available as are other traditional target programs.

We support and upgrade our programs for many years. Many Frye employees remain with the company for years and are knowledgeable and dedicated to customer support.

MedRx Inc

MedRx Inc, Largo, Fla, entered the hearing health care market in 1994 after developing a superior video otoscope. The market for video otoscopy was in its infancy with a few high-priced products that were bulky, cumbersome, and not providing clinically acceptable images. MedRx patented a unique design feature that significantly improved the image quality, provided affordable value, and subsequently captured a commanding share of the domestic market.

Once the video otoscopy market was becoming saturated, the company embarked on a long-term strategic plan to design, develop, and market a family of advanced computer-based testing and diagnostic technologies to replace the stand-alone mechanical instrumentation prevalent in the market. MedRx recognized the impact that computerization was having in the medical field, in the programming and fitting of digital hearing devices, and in running modern health care practices. The company determined that the computer could be the primary engine for diagnostics, testing, and archiving results.

The company successfully launched a multifunctional PC platform that provided complete audiometry, real ear measurement, hearing aid testing, and hearing aid programming.

In 2004, a more modular approach was embarked upon, utilizing remarkably smaller components and advanced electronics. The AVANT family of products, including audiometers, live speech mapping/real ear measurement, and hearing aid testing, was launched in 2005, forever changing the image of diagnostics and testing in the market.

MedRx subsequently received international ISO 13485 certification and CE marking, allowing the company to export internationally. Today, in addition to the United States, MedRx sells in more than 20 international markets.

Vivatone Hearing Systems LLC

Vivatone Hearing Systems LLC, Shelton, Conn, developed the first open ear hearing aid that placed the receiver directly in the ear canal. The Totally-Open-Canal (TOC) Receiver-in-the-Ear hearing aid was introduced to the world at the American Academy of Audiology annual convention in 2008. Innovative design and modern digital technology are combined to create a hearing aid that has dramatically changed the way hearing professionals are fitting hearing aids and positively changed the lives of those with hearing loss around the world.

In an effort to reduce common patient complaints in his own practice, audiologist Dr Natan Bauman created the first Vivatone hearing aid. One patient, Leon Hirsch, previous owner of US Surgical, was so pleased with the results, he created the company Vivatone Hearing Systems LLC. Since that time, Vivatone has continued to incorporate technological advances to create the most complete RITE product line in the hearing industry.

What began as a niche product has quickly become the product choice for many professionals. Now, everyone can enjoy the cosmetic appeal and acoustic benefits of our RITE design, even those patients with severe and profound losses!

The continuing mission of the company is to provide the greatest level of satisfaction through our products and service to our hearing professional partners, and in turn to the hearing impaired public that we serve.
