A recent article in the Los Angeles Times profiled Gigi Caruso, daughter of real estate tycoon Rick Caruso, and an advocate for kids with hearing loss.

Gigi was born with a bilateral hearing loss and wears Phonak Lyric hearing aids, according to the article. As a result, Gigi and her parents have advocated for hearing coverage for children and have supported Assembly Bill 598, otherwise known as the Let California Kids Hear Act, which would have required private insurers to cover the cost of hearing devices for infants and children, up to $3,000 per hearing aid.

According to the LA Times, Governor Gavin Newsom’s “administration is seeking to secure an estimated $10 million per year in funding through this year’s budget process, which is currently ongoing, for the measure.”

Rick Caruso has donated $25 million to endow the USC Caruso Family Center for Childhood Communication and the USC Tina and Rick Caruso Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery at USC’s Keck School of Medicine.
