According to news site AL.com, the Atlanta Braves have drafted a deaf all-state catcher in the 35th round of major league baseball’s first-year player draft on June 10, 2015. AL.com reports that the Atlanta Braves selected Charles Henderson High School catcher Chase Smartt, who was born profoundly deaf and wears a cochlear implant.

Smartt was the 1,050th player picked in this year’s draft and the second taken straight out of an Alabama high school. Smartt was also named the Class 5A Hitter and Player of the Year for the 2015 season by the Alabama Sports Writers Association, and was selected for AL.com’s Super All-State Baseball Team.
