According to news site AL.com, the Atlanta Braves have drafted a deaf all-state catcher in the 35th round of major league baseball’s first-year player draft on June 10, 2015. AL.com reports that the Atlanta Braves selected Charles Henderson High School catcher Chase Smartt, who was born profoundly deaf and wears a cochlear implant.

Smartt was the 1,050th player picked in this year’s draft and the second taken straight out of an Alabama high school.¬†Smartt was also named the Class 5A Hitter and Player of the Year for the 2015 season by the Alabama Sports Writers Association, and was selected for AL.com’s Super All-State Baseball Team.
