Research Shows Hearing Issues Common in Cancer Survivors

While children receiving chemotherapy routinely undergo hearing tests, adults don’t, and a new study by UC San Francisco (UCSF) reports for the first time that significant hearing issues often occur among adult survivors of the most common forms of cancer. The researchers found that more than half the survivors in their study who had been treated with chemotherapy experienced significant hearing problems.

Mass Eye and Ear Researchers Awarded $12.5 Million Grant

A team of Mass Eye and Ear researchers in the Eaton-Peabody Laboratories have been awarded a five-year, $12.5 million P50 Clinical Research Center Grant from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communicable Disorders (NIDCD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to continue their research on cochlear synaptopathy, or hidden hearing loss, a type of hearing damage first discovered at Mass Eye and Ear in 2009.
