This level of sound surpasses the average auditory threshold of pain and greatly exceeds the volume of a jet engine taking off. Exposure at this level is capable of causing not only permanent hearing loss but also migraine, balance, and other auditory symptoms, according to a statement issued by ASHA.
“In 2017, Health Canada required that the patient medication information for mefloquine be updated to warn that in some people, dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus, and loss of balance may become permanent,” said Dr Remington Nevin, executive director of The Quinism Foundation.
The Department of Defense has reversed its policy on coverage of auditory implants, and will now cover these as prosthetic devices for all beneficiaries of Tricare, a health insurance system for military members and dependents.
