Oticon has released its Oticon Opn™, characterizing it as a paradigm shift in hearing aids that combines breakthrough technologies proven to enable people with hearing loss to experience less listening effort and enjoy better speech understanding.
Powered by the Velox™ platform, the newest BrainHearing™ solution from Oticon employs an “open sound” approach to manage multiple speech and noise sources, even in complex listening situations. The company says the new OpenSound Navigator™ scans the environment 100 times per second to analyze and balance every sound individually. Environmental sounds are said to be accessible, but not disturbing.
“Oticon Opn is the first hearing aid proven to make it easier on the brain,” said Don Schum, PhD, vice president of audiology and professional relations for Oticon Inc. “In testing using pupillometry, a well-recognized measure of stress on the brain, Opn users experienced 20% less listening effort when trying to understand speech. Additional studies show that because Oticon Opn users have freed up mental resources, they are able to remember 20% more of what is said. Testing also shows that Opn increases speech understanding, the parameter most important to users, by 30% over other Oticon hearing solutions.”
Designed specifically for hearing aids, Oticon reports that the Velox platform is a powerhouse of groundbreaking features. The tiny chip is said to have the speed needed to manage multiple sound sources, analyzing and processing sound data 50 times faster than before. A 64-band frequency resolution enables a more precise sound analysis and better sound quality to support the brain’s ability to make sense of sound.
Opn offers TwinLink™ technology, two wireless communication systems in one hearing solution. Power-efficient near-field magnetic communication (NFMI) in one dedicated system is optimized for binaural ear-to-ear communication. Users enjoy high quality sound for better listening in all environments with very low power consumption. A second dedicated system uses 2.4GHz Bluetooth direct streaming for wireless streamer-free communication to smartphones and other devices. Developed specifically for hearing aids, this variant of Bluetooth uses significantly less battery power when streaming.
The free, downloadable Oticon ON App allows users discreet control of their Opn hearing aids as well as other internet-connected solutions.
Opn connects to the Internet via If This Then That (IFTTT.com), a web service that automates other web-based functions to make life easier. Users can connect to a wide range of IFTTT-enabled devices used in everyday life such as door bells, baby monitors, and thermostats. Opn provides users with a solution that will enable them to use their hearing aids with a growing number of IFTTT-compatible products and services as they become available.
“Our newest BrainHearing™ solution provides an unprecedented array of innovative technologies that open a world of sound for people with hearing loss,” said Oticon President Peer Lauritsen. “Opn makes it easier for people with hearing loss to communicate and stay socially active, with less listening effort and more ability to remember what is being said. And now, they can even connect their hearing aids to the internet.”
New Oticon Opn hearing solutions are available in the popular discreet miniRITE™. For more information about Oticon Opn, visit the Oticon website, which has recently been updated to make it easy for consumers to find the information that is most relevant and useful to them whatever the stage of their journey to better hearing.

I live in northwest Colorado – very rural. Can you give me the name of a dealer within 200 miles?
I have a pair on loan from my audiologist. I love them but cannot afford $6800. any suggestions?
I have been using Nuear IIC aids for 4 years and now switched to Oticon OPN. The new aids are remarkably better as I am now hearing sounds I have not been accustomed to hearing, like my turn signals. Rather than wearing ear phones when watching streaming Netflix or Prime, I stream into my aids which dramatically enhances my enjoyment of what I am watching. This device is also made by Oticon. I am still testing the Oticon ON app on my IPad and will probably eventually move from Samsung to IPhone to allow better hearing of phone conversations.
I have been told this is only available for behind the ear and not in the hearing aids //
I have Oticon Opn aids and they are just great. Does any one know if there is a system where as I can stream music from android samsung .Cheers Tony
hello, yes by using connect clip
I wonder if Oticon Opn is compatible with kirkland signature 7.0?
I have tinnitus with hearing loss in my left ear. I have some hearing loss in my right ear but no tinnitus. I have been unable to find hearing aids that help with the tinnitus. Can these aids help me?
May any please suggest the right option, to buy these Oticon Opn, Is it good to buy at an Audiologist or any Online site is available that sells the original product, thank you..
I’ve been trialing opn having worn Alta Pro. I have one ear with a 75 drop as my worst ear. The quality of hearing of opn is superior to Alta Pro. However, their marketing about hearing people talking around you in a multi-talker area is a stretch. Food courts, shopping malls were a total wash out. Forget restaurants with music or loud chatter. Sitting in a business meeting was better as the room echo was suppressed. Whether I could do business in a coffee shop is questionable.I didn’t find its recognition of what noise to suppress to be sophisticated.
I have had my OPN3aids for a few days – they are terrific. My only disappointment is they are not compatible with my iPad which is third-generation. I understand they are only compatible with the fourth-generation iPad. Is this correct?
What kind of warranty does Oticon offer?
It would depend on the Dr or hearing center you go thru. I got mine at a hearing center and I have 3 yr repair warranty w/ 1 yr Lost stolen or damage w/a 400.00 deductible. Free batteries and free office visits.
I tested the OPN recently with a representative and audiologist and I was very impressed compared to my current aides. I use them for Central Auditory Processing Disorder. I’m currently using the Nero2 Pro Ti with Oticon Streamer Pro 1.3 and it’s been a life changing experience. I heard that Oticon is working on a microphone accessory for the OPN line is that true? Secondly are OPN devices compatible with Android? Or only IOS?
OPN will be compatible with Android in the next coming months I heard. I just purchased my OPN’s and found out they only work with IPhones
Have owned a pair of Oticon Opn 1 hearing aids for the past six months. 75 years old. Noise induced hearing loss from Army basic training firing ranges in the late 1960s. Constant tinnitus since. Hearing levels have deteriorated from the Army’s 3,500 cps to my current 2,000 cps. Hearing loss had impacted interactions with my wife, family and anyone I talked to • Had our hearing tested by a Cleveland Clinic audiology department. The wife passed; I flunked. They offered “four levels of hearing aid technology.” We opted for latest technology and cost is no object. The audiologist programmed a pair of Opn 1 aids, placed them on my ears and asked us both to walk around outside for 15 minutes. What an amazing improvement in what I could hear and understand! • I wear them from awakening until bedtime. Hearing is amplified, for me, in the 2,000 to 4,000 cps range. iPhone controls -8 to 0 to +4 volume levels, plus left/right adjustments. 360-degree hearing interaction. My tinnitus is attenuated (confirmed in hearing test sound proof room). Prefer to talk normally to my car’s Blue Tooth phone system, rather than trying to sync through the Opn 1 • You can justify this purchase the same as you do any other purchase – Multiply the advantages and divide the objections (almost always, the cost).
I am now 24 hours into a trial pair of OPNs. My first hearing aids, at 66 years old.
So far, I am amazed. I can’t compare these to any others, as I have never tried any others. But these are working very well in my opinion.
My question is price related. The audiologist that set these up for me has quoted me $6400 USD for the pair. I can find them online for $3800. This is a fairly substantial difference. Can someone tell me a good reason to pay the higher price?
I would see the cheaper price being as purchasing the devices outright and then having to find someone to test and program you. More than likely they are going to charge you a fee every time you come in whether it is for an office visit, hearing test, supplies or adjustments. Your hearing is so important and it only makes sense to go to a Dr or HIS to have your hearing tested and go directly thru them. I work at a hearing center. The cost at a hearing center usually includes office visits and supplies and it coordinates with the higher fee.
I just received my OPN hearing aids 3 days ago for only 2,000$ USD here in sunny Puerto Rico.. As my second set, I recommend going to an office instead of online. There are many tweaks needed in the beginning. I got 2 yr warranty w a 300$ deductible for repair and 3 free visits. Good deal. Still working out kinks. Can use w android phone. But requires additional parts.
I have been recently diagnosed as a candidate for hearing aids. I think it is a good idea and probably should have been done years ago. The recommendation is the Oticon Opn. The biggest drawback I am finding is that they are compatible with IOS devices and not Android. This is a pretty significant barrier, but I have not found another option that is compatible with Android. Is there a reliable good quality device that works with Android? I have recently moved to a Samsung Galaxy S7 Active. If there is currently no device that works with Android, which would be very sad, is the Oticon Opn a quality device on its own? Much of what I am reading seems to be directly from Oticon produced literature.
Thank you,
Jim
There are currently no hearing aids that stream directly to android devices. This is an android issue, not a hearing aid manufacturer issue. You must have an accessory (streamer, connect clip, phone clip, etc) to stream calls and audio from your android to any hearing aid with bluetooth capability. Opns are great.
I was told by my audiologist that Option is going to have this available to stream to androids in June of 2017.
The Oticon OPn app is now available on Android, but not all features of the app work (streaming). But I read that the additional features are supposed to be available by the end of 2017.
I have had a set of these for over a week. They have performed exceptionally well. They have great connectivity with my iPhone 6. The technology of directionality seems to be working, as I am starting to isolate conversations amid other noise. I can’t imagine any other product being able to compare to the opn technology from Oticon.
I am having difficulty with the Oticon ON app that I just downloaded yesterday. I have an Android with 6.0 Marshmallow. The app downloaded fine and I was able to pair my aids and tested the volume control. It worked. I took out the aids and went to bed. This morning, I put on my aids and turned on the app to try to volume control, and it says “no connection.” It shows my name and also shows the location of my aids on the map (“find my hearing aids”), and my Bluetooth lists them and Bluetooth is turned on; so why is it showing “no connection” to the aids for purpose of volume control? This is very frustrating. Please help!
I am having the same problem. I have to restart my Samsung Galaxy 6 in order for the app to recognize my hearing aids and start working again. Then after a few hours it stops working again. Frustrating.
I have the Oticon hearing aids for the iPhone. I notice when I walk around school or my house the hearing aid will cut out and then connect back. What causes this? It is very annoying.
I have the Oticon hearing aids, and my ear molds and tubing–which are plastic–have turned black. At first, the hearing aid dispenser lady said she didn’t know why and had never seen that problem. Then turned around and said it was my oil skin that had caused the aids to turn black. My question is–is her answer correct? Is the answer that I pay $150.00 every 6 months for new ear molds? Please help me! Betty McClain
Im just about to get fitted with a trial for 45 days from my local audiologist with the OPN. I havent got it yet but im concerned about calls dropping from my iPhone7. My insurance covers a lot of the cost and i may end up paying just $1300 which is about the same as i would spend on getting a GE Resound Linx2 from Costco (Cala). Which one of these are the better model??
I”m using the your recent technology “shout” the OTICON Opn1 after having experient the previous technology. the sound which comes out mine as well as the partners is rather a screaming one far, very far from any normal voice. This despite Mrs. Goldberg your local top adviser doing her utmost efforts to help. Can you as chief inventor propose some help
Hi,
I know that Oticon Opn has Two Technologies.
1) Made for iPhone
2) 2.4 GHz Technology.
I want to know if the 2.4 GHz Technology supports in Android via Bluetooth 4.0?
Only if your phone is new enough! I have HTC One M8 (it’s barely 2 years old) and the app does’t even show up in my Google Play Store. I suspect that the audiologist lied to me – or parroted the lie from Oticon, assuring us that the devices are compatible with Android technology. A long story that will end up costing me $6,400 for a product that doesn’t work for me…
These hearing aids are currently compatible only using an IOS system which is the operating system only apple products use ( iPhone, iPad, etc). Therefore it is not available in the Google App Store. Android does not use the IOS operating system. However, I’ve have been reading that Android is introducing their version of the app later this. Keep in mind when looking at hearing aids going forward if you do not currently own an iPhone or iPad or Mac the hearing aid app will not work. Good luck.
I love the Bluetooth phone connection and overall hearing but I could hear better at the movies with the old ones. Is there something I could do to improve that?
Have had my Opn Minirite for over a month. Amazing technology. Works great with my iPhone 7 plus, although there are occasionally short disconnects. I have not been able to listen with them on my iPad mini2. Wifi does not seem to ever find the hearing aids. Suggestions?
I have the Oticon OPN for the past 2 months, I am hearing much better but I have issues with the bluetooth and my apple 7 phone. When I am receiving calls I can hear them fine but they are not able to hear me clearly. It seems the blue tooth connectivity can be inconsistent. My 60 day trail period is up soon, maybe its the hearing aid, and I’ll try another.
It’s my understanding that these stream sound to the hearing aids via Bluetooth, but do not have a Bluetooth mic to send sound back to the iPhone (unlike a bluetooth headset). So you still need to use the iPhone mic (hold phone to month as normal). Maybe someone from Oticon could confirm this understanding?
Does the Oticon OPN come with tinnitus masking?
Have very irritating clogged ears. I can compare it to coming down a mountain and your ears don’t clear or pop. Am looking for a way to relieve myself from this condition. Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Hi Rick,
We’re posting your message, but also advise you to get evaluated by a hearing care professional as soon as possible, to determine what is causing your occluded ears. Although our professional readers may have some suggestions, this forum is intended for sharing opinions and ideas, and should not be relied upon for medical/healthcare advice.
I have been diagnosed with Meniere’s disease and my right ear always feel plugged. Dr says it is a symptom of the disease, I sympathize with you for having both ears plugged that way, it is very frustrating for me.
I have a demo set of OPN’s and have a set on order, along with an iPhone 7. I’m looking forward to eliminating carrying the streamer which I usually don’t have with me and hate wearing all the time.
However, in my office, we no longer have desk phones and use VOiP with Microsoft Lync for all calls. While I can dial in via a separate phone, it’s much easier to use Lync directly. What is the best solution for this? Is there a streamer still available if I wanted to keep one in the office for that purpose? Will the OPN’s pair with the Seinhauser dongle that I currently use with my Alto Pro/Streamer? Should we order with a telecoil and use a telecoil enabled headset?
Dear Oticon: I am on my 4th iteration of Oticon. The OPN prospect seems good, but our best friend lost the tip of one year, and discovered after one-two hours of search on the rug, that the high-tech tip was lost in her ear. It took a visit from a technician to remove it. Risk seems like an instrument left in surgery.
I swim a lot and a lost tip in my ear would be pressured further in my ear. What is solution for preventing this risk of loss of tip in ear or outside? This is different from loss of a mold.
I have just had a professional audiologist test my hearing. Severe loss. Have bought several Oticon models over past 30 years.
Please email me two quotes, as I move between USA and Mexico, so $$ and MXN prices would be helpful. Top model, behind the ear style, with remote control of program/volume.
And any options you would suggest for this age 91 veteran of WWll. Cost is a factor as my only son is now in chemotherapy for widely spread cancer, and that is expensive.
Please respond email as rapidly as feasible.
Mr. Masquelier,
We have forwarded your message to Oticon Customer Support via email in hopes that you will get a timely response directly from them. Just in case you need to follow up, the direct phone number for Oticon USA is: (800) 526-3921. Email: [email protected]

If you are a WW2 vet you can get the finest hearing aids, including Oticon, free at the VA–no strings. And I mean the best.
Hi, Is it (Oticon Opn) available in Cape Town, South Africa?
Yes. Contact Christine Adams, Acoustician. Cape Town
Hi, I “broke” my left ear 48 years ago and have not been able to find a solution to my hearing problems. CAN YOU ASSIST?
I love my hearing aids. Was told when I first tried them it might take a while to get used to. They have been amazing from the start. My only problem has been that the loop device that connects the hearing aids to my phone keeps cutting out. Have tried to reinstall the app, but unfortunately have had no joy. So am now unable to use my mobile phone
I just purchased mine a couple weeks ago here at home in Las Vegas, Nv. This is my 5th pair. Absolutely love the light weight, easy entry into the ear and very very small. I can now understand what is being said in front of me or behind! The Volume control is very easy to get to and adjust. The left ear volume is for lower and the right is for increased volume…The only thing I wish for is for this to go completely in the ear.
My benefit covered 100% of the cost. I had no idea they run about $6k a pair. I am eligible for new ones every three years.
Can you tell me what insurance provider you have? Mine does not cover any of the costs for my son’s hearing aids in CA.
Hi Angie,
The other reader informed us that she has Health Plan of Nevada through her employer. Unfortunately, provider plans vary from state to state, as you know, with variations in coverage.
Where can I buy it in the United states and how much it costs ? And can I find it.in Hong Kong as well and where? Thank you !

I understand your product will work with iPhones via Bluetooth. When will it be available to work with Android?
Will this new technology be available to children under age five who are wearing earmolds?
I have an Oticon Alta Pro. Can I replace the existing chip with the OPN, or do I need to get an entirely new Oticon?
I have for the past twenty years wore Oticon hearing aids, offered and bought in London. Now I live in Rome and unable to go back to London. Do you think my clinic can program the Oticon OPN from the records they have dated one year ago? I wear Alta Pro but want to try to see if my hearing improves by having them to dispatch them to me on trial even if they will not work perfectly but enough for me to understand the improvement. Is this possibile? Or can you tell me which clinic is best in Rome to contact for such a trial? Many thanks!
Dear Ms. Powell/Mr. Powell,

I am wearing them now for 2 days. I never had hearing aids before and was told that they would sound tinny, my voice would sound really different and I would have problems in noisy places. My first day I went to a noisy restaurant and had absolutely no problems, my voice sounds only slight different and I am now hearing things I never remember hearing before. They are great as far as I am concerned.
How does the Oticon Opn work for folks with reverse curve hearing loss?
I received a pair today in Houston, in just one day I experienced a significant improvement in hearing, speech recognition in meetings, etc. This product easily delivers as promised, if not better. Thank you Oticon!!
I tried a trial pair about a week ago. It is amazing the difference between this newer version vs older models such as the Agile Pro (I’ve been wearing for 4 years). The clarity is amazing. True sound is what it is. I don’t have to have people repeat things, even in a crowded cafe. Driving down the road, I rarely heard the wind static as is the case with other hearing aids. I actually had to turn down the TV it was so clear. One other great thing, I could actually tell where sounds were coming from even in the far distance or from behind me. I never heard sound behind me until this wonderful new solution. I plan on getting them, however, the price is still a little steep at $3,100 per ear (that’s with an $800 temporary discount from my hearing center. If you have the money, it will be well spent, I promise you!
Thanks!
Has Opticon made the OPN available to Disabled Vetrans . Thru the Veterans Department
Got a pair of Oticon OPN 1 from VA today, it is not listed on products available through VA page on Oticon website though
Yes, the OPN is available for disabled vets. It took me about a month to get an initial appointment, and they have been ordered. I have an appointment in another month to receive them. The VA was very thorough with their assessment. Although I do not have a hearing-specific disability, they are covered by the VA.
Does this device fits people with severe and deep loss of hearing?
If last miniRITE models are any indication, it might at least be able to cover severe losses.
When will the system be available for 80-90% loss? I think they call it profound or severe. I have the top rated Phonak and want to try the new concept, that makes sense like the Bose speaker systems. Good idea! Will you try to make an in the ear model?
Thanks, Steve
What will the cost for this aid be in Canada?
What will the cost be?
I just came from Listen Up Canada and a pair was about $7,200 and a bit more list price but there is a deal on at the moment–buy one aid and get the other for just 50%, so about $1,800 off. Might also be able to get the $500 each aid from the government contribution if you have not used it in the last five years.
I just got a quote today. $5240 CAD for a pair including a couple of bonus accessories for TV that don’t require an iPhone. I’m wearing my trial pair right now and EVERYTHING is so much louder. Maybe a bit too loud as the sound of my typing is almost painful. But I can adjust the volume. 🙂
I am working as an area sales manager in India for Oticon. I have one patient with Opn hearing aids because last month he underwent a trial of these in the U.S…kindly let me know 1) How much it will be/cost in India, and 2) When I will be able to get it in India.
