BEAR Project in Denmark Evaluates Hearing Treatment

A collaborative project between Danish universities, hearing aid manufacturers and other experts will evaluate hearing loss treatment. The Better Hearing Rehabilitation (BEAR) project will be a collaborative effort aimed at improving the quality of treatment so that people with hearing loss can get more out of hearing aids. Limitations of the audiogram will be addressed, as will the efficacy of a range of hearing tests and hearing aid fitting approaches.

Researchers at the University of Connecticut are reexamining the debate as to whether deaf children should learn sign language to maximize their potential for optimal development. Previous research has shown that children born deaf frequently exhibit learning deficits. Yet, research has also found that deaf children exposed to sign language from birth develop language, cognition, and literacy on normal timetables.

Study Shows That Hearing Aids Improve Brain Function

According to a study from The University of Texas at El Paso, hearing aids improve brain function in people with hearing loss. After 2 weeks of hearing aid use, study participants had increased their test scores for word recall, selective attention, and processing speed.

In celebration of Black History Month, the Dyer Arts Center at Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf is showcasing the work of black deaf artists around the globe. “Unfolding the Soul of Black Deaf Expressions” runs through February 27, 2016, and features more than 150 works of art from 30 black deaf artists.

Scientists Have Identified Novel Gene in Deafness

The Wbp2 gene was found to be involved in progressive hearing loss during a large-scale mouse study, and also found to be involved in human deafness. The study also showed that hearing impairment is linked to hormonal signaling rather than to hair cell degeneration.
