SafeAwake, from SafeAwake LLC, Columbia, Md, a safety device for awakening deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals to emergencies, listens for the smoke alarm and activates a patented vibrating bed shaker, a low-frequency, high-decibel signal, and a visible strobe.
The device, which is portable and user-friendly, works in conjunction with a standard smoke detector. Users place the bed shaker under the mattress and plug it in. It is always on, listening for sound from the smoke detector.
SafeAwake plugs into standard electrical wall outlets and includes a battery backup providing alert protection for up to 24 hours if the power is out, says the company.
A study funded by the National Institute of Health found SafeAwake to be 100% effective for awakening sleeping individuals, the company says.
