Nina Kraus, PhD, is the Hugh Knowles Professor of Neurobiology in the Department of Communication Sciences and Otolaryngology at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. Through her research and those of her colleagues in the Kraus Lab, she has continually uncovered new findings about auditory processing and the brain, as well as our lives in sound—findings that have great consequences for young children and their exposure to music, as well as for people with language disorders, concussion, cognitive issues, hearing loss, and more.

Study Shows How Tests of Hearing Can Reveal HIV’s Effects on the Brain

When comparing the FFR results of 68 HIV-positive adults to 59 HIV-negative adults, the investigators found that the auditory-neurophysiological responses to certain speech cues were disrupted in HIV-positive adults, even though they performed normally on hearing tests—confirming that these hearing difficulties are grounded in the central nervous system.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy May Reduce Tinnitus Symptoms, UK Study Shows

As yet there is no treatment to stop the tinnitus noise but this research, funded by the British Tinnitus Association (BTA), shows that treatment can make it less severe, intrusive, and bothersome.
