Lee mentions several recent studies—research published in the American Journal of Otolaryngology and a case series published in Acta Otorhinolaryngologica Italica—that showed patients who had tested positive for COVID-19 as having symptoms of hearing loss. A letter published in the International Journal of Immunopathology and Pharmacology points out that many of the medications used to treat SARS-CoV-2—including chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin, remdesivir, favipiravir, and lopinavir—are potentially ototoxic.
