The American Cochlear Implant (ACI) Alliance announced it has published a new blog, “An Octogenarian’s Cochlear Implant Journey,” following the process of Bruce Sloane, an 82-year-old man who thought he wasn’t a candidate for a cochlear implant. Through information provided by his audiologist, Sloane realized he should pursue a cochlear implant. The blog follows his medical and audiological evaluations, the surgery, and early outcomes. According to the announcement, “it is a warm-hearted story of hearing lost and found.”

The ACI Alliance believes that cochlear implants provide life-changing benefits for people of all ages and that age is not a contraindication for cochlear implantation. Additionally, the Alliance believes that appropriate candidates do not need to be completely deaf and people with more residual hearing (who are still candidates), on average, derive the greatest benefit. Insurance coverage is available for appropriate candidates under Medicare.

The ACI Alliance is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving access to cochlear implantation through research, advocacy, and awareness. Its members are otolaryngologists, audiologists, speech pathologists, educators, and others on cochlear implant teams as well as parent and consumer advocates.
