On July 23, 2013, a 57-year-old teacher and grandmother had her MED-EL cochlear implant turned on during a live segment of NBC’s Today Show.

Sarah Campbell of Norristown, Pa, has been hearing impaired since she was a child. Since then, she has used hearing aids and learned how to lip read, but as an adult her hearing deteriorated further and the hearing aids no longer worked.

Three weeks before the Today Show episode, she underwent cochlear implant surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. Watch the video below to see the result when Campbell’s MED-EL implant is turned on for the first time.
