Somerset, NY – Oticon has opened voting for the 2011 Focus on People Awards. It’s the first year that Oticon has invited the public to participate in the selection process. Winners will be announced some time in September 2011.

To cast a vote, participants need to log on to oticonusa.com. They will then be able to vote for the top finalists in each of four categories: student, adult, advocacy, and practitioner.

Tabulations on the total number of votes received by each finalist will determine who will be the first, second, and third place winners in each category.

The 12 finalists, who represent the "best of the best" from this year’s nominations, include the top three nominees in each of the four categories.

This is the first year that Oticon has invited the public to participate in the selection process. Oticon President Peer Lauritsen explained in the press statement that the company added online voting “to further expand awareness of the program and its mission and give people across the United States the opportunity to add their voices to the selection of the winning finalists.”

This is the 14th year of the program. The award was created to honor students, adults, and advocacy volunteers with hearing loss who have demonstrated through their accomplishments that hearing loss does not limit a person’s ability to make a difference in their families, communities, and the world.

By spotlighting people with hearing loss and their contributions, Oticon’s goal is to change outdated stereotypes that discourage people from seeking professional help for their hearing loss.

Voting is open now through August 29, 2011, at oticonusa.com.
