Meridian, Idaho — HearingHealth4U, part of a 501c3 non-profit group that provides quality used hearing aids to low-income individuals, has initiated a used hearing aid drive.
“We are constantly running low on hearing aids due to the ever growing ongoing demand for quality used hearing aids at affordable prices,” said HearingHealth4U’s founder Ray Deardorff in an email interview.
Deardorff says that all donated hearing aids are cleaned, inspected, and tested to be in good working condition. Hearinghealth4U does minor case and maintenance repairs, but if more work is needed, the hearing aids are sent to an outdide repair company.
The refurbished instruments are then offered to low-income individuals, but they are not free. “There is a cost,” said Deardorff. “We don’t believe in giving hearing aids away. We believe that there has to be some value associated with hearing again. The cost depends on the hearing aids and what the person is looking for, and in need of.”
Deardorff says that the price of the hearing aids will vary, but is typically between $100 and $250 for a pair.
“People seem to value and appreciate their hearing aids more when there is some worth associated to them,” Deardorff said. “In some cases, if the need is really there, we will fit people at no cost. We’re all about helping people hear and trying to meet the needs of the hard-of-hearing community.”
The organization is associated with Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) as a provider on HLAA’s financial assistance website and receives many referrals from HLAA. As a result, although the charity is based in Idaho, the HLAA affiliation allows HearingHealth4U to fit people throughout the United States.
All used hearing aid donations to HearingHealth4U are tax-deductible at fair market value. Donated hearing aids can be sent to 33 E Idaho Ave #200, Meridian ID 83642.
