It’s likely that at some point you will encounter a veteran in your hearing care practice. According to the 2015 Annual Benefits Report from the US Department of Veteran’s Affairs, hearing loss and tinnitus are the top two service-connected injuries affecting veterans from every generation. But, as Sean Lehman, Heroes With Hearing Loss national spokesman, points out in this white paper, many individuals with military experience have unique challenges that may make treatment more complex.
This paper details the prevalence of underlying chronic health conditions among veterans, which can impact hearing loss, as well as certain aspects of military culture, such as the desire to not seem weak for seeking help or a hesitancy to confide in a hearing care practitioner, that can make a difference in the patient-practictioner relationship. Lehman also suggests veteran-tailored treatment delivery options such as tele-audiology appointments and a focus on trust-building.
