UMSOM Researchers Study Music Volume During Workouts

Fitness center instructors often turn up music volumes significantly during classes sometimes loud enough to cause hearing damage based on an assumption that participants will work out more intensively when volumes are raised. A new University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) study—a summary of which appears on the UMSOM website—however, found that those who attend indoor cycling (“spinning”) classes do not lower the intensity of their workouts when the volume is reduced to a safer decibel level.

Self-Evaluation Tools for Hearing Loss Prevention Programs Offered in NIOSH Blog

A team of researchers from the University of Washington, University of Michigan, and Yale University recently carried out a NIOSH-funded study of hearing loss prevention program (HLPP) effectiveness. The team studied HLPPs at 14 US facilities operated by a single multinational metals manufacturing company, and based on the results of this research, created two self-evaluation tools for use by HLPP managers.

Deputy Sheriff Awarded 2017 NIOSH/NHCA Hearing Loss Prevention Award

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in partnership with the National Hearing Conservation Association (NHCA), has awarded Ryan Lee Scott, a deputy sheriff with the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, Florida, the 2017 Safe-in-Sound Excellence in Hearing Loss Prevention Award for his documented results and leadership in hearing loss prevention.
