Oaktree Products Inc, Chesterfield, Mo, introduces the potentially lifesaving Lifetone HL bedside fire alarm and clock. which helps awaken hearing-impaired people in the event of an emergency.

In the United States, smoke detectors are required by law to sound at 3000 Hz, but a recent study conducted by the National Fire Protection Agency showed that nearly half of hearing-impaired people were not awakened by current smoke alarms—because they cannot hear them.

The Lifetone has a powerful sensor that "hears" the current smoke alarm and delivers a 90 dB, 520 Hz, square wave alarm at bedside. The frequency, combined with a bed shaker, has been clinically proven to wake virtually all-hearing impaired individuals.
